The age structure of the population has a direct impact on food needs and preferences; younger populations require energy-dense and high-protein foods, while older individuals are more likely to prioritize specific and healthier diets. These demographic changes also affect consumption, production, and distribution patterns, introducing new economic and social challenges. Given the environmental pressures and natural resource limitations, it is essential to develop and implement effective policies to ensure food security. This study investigates the impact of the age structure of the population on food security in Iran, utilizing the GMM from 1990 to 2022. The results indicate that the middle-aged group (aged 15-64) positively influences food security, while both the young (aged 0-14) and elderly (aged 65 and above) groups have a negative impact. Urbanization negatively affects food security, whereas economic growth shows a positive and significant effect. Considering the positive influence of the middle-aged population on food security, development policies should focus on enhancing the participation of this group in economic activities and food production. This could be achieved through job creation, education and training initiatives, and social and economic support.
