Studying the effects of economic growth shock on income distribution: using the autoregressive distributed lags (NARDL)
Abstract: Income distribution can be influenced by various factors, making it essential to explore these influences. This study aims to assess how economic growth affects income distribution through the autoregressive distributed lags NARDL from the years 1978 to 2022. The findings indicate that, in the NARDL approach, negative economic growth shocks significantly increase the Gini coefficient in the long run, whereas positive growth shocks do not have a significant effect. Long-term shocks from inflation and unemployment also positively impact the Gini coefficient, leading to increased income inequality. Conversely, shocks from per capita banking facilities and government spending negatively affect the Gini coefficient long-term, reducing income inequality as these variables increase. In short-term NARDL estimations, the error correction coefficient adjusts 73% of the imbalance in the Gini coefficient for the next period.
Keywords: Economic growth, income distribution, nonlinear autoregressive distributed lags (NARDL) approach.
