The analysis of energy consumption and intensity is of great importance, as these two variables provide a comprehensive picture of the country's energy status and play a key role in assessing energy efficiency and the sustainability of energy systems. These indicators not only reflect the level of consumption and energy efficiency but are also directly related to achieving sustainable development goals, ensuring equitable access to energy, improving quality of life, and protecting the environment. This study, using a data mining approach, analyzes energy intensity and energy consumption in Iran. Time series data from the World Bank for the period 1990 to 2023 have been used to identify energy consumption patterns and simulate their behavior under different conditions. One of the main challenges of the research is the correct selection of data, which directly affects the validity of the results. For preprocessing, a missing data replacement technique based on autoencoder has been used to complete missing values and standardize the data. Also, to analyze similarities and classify the data, distance-based and time series similarity methods have been applied. The findings show that Iran’s energy intensity depends on environmental variables, natural resources, and social welfare. The analysis of total energy consumption also indicates that economic, environmental, and social factors, especially fossil fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions—are influential. The study recommends that energy policymakers in Iran adopt a cross-sectoral and data-driven approach, considering economic, social, and environmental variables in their policymaking to achieve optimal energy management, reduce energy imbalance.
